Dear {FirstName},
As you know, much of the debate in Washington right now focuses on holding Wall Street accountable. What you may not know is that I voted to hold Wall Street accountable way back in December 2009 when I voted for the Wall Street Refrom and Consumer Protection Act of 2009.
The current debate is happening mainly in the Senate where we have been waiting on Republican leadership. Unfortunately, they had been using the filibuster to prevent the will (or demand) of the American people: It is time to hold Wall Street accountable. No more taxpayer bailouts for those playing fast and loose with no consequences.
While the Senate moves legislation holding Wall Street accountable, I continue to focus on the most critical issue facing our country: longterm debt and deficits. I penned an opinion piece printed in southern Minnesota papers last week - you can read it by clicking here.
In short, tackling the debt facing this country will require a bi-partisan solution. To address this critical issue now, I am a leading advocate for Pay As You Go budgeting rules - which require every dime spent to be paid for either through cuts or new revenue. These rules were in place in the 1990's when President Clinton balanced the budget and were thrown out by Republicans so President Bush could run record deficits and amount a national debt in the trillions.
In addition, I support President Obama's debt commission and have asked that Speaker Pelosi hold an up or down vote on its recommendations.
Finally, I support President Obama's spending freeze - but encourage the President to go further. He should make due on his promise to completely defund programs that are not delivering meaningful investment on behalf of the American people.
As I continue to push for long term solutions to the national debt, my opponents have accused me of supporting a "culture of bailouts" in Washington. Too bad for them my voting record is clear: I opposed both the bank bailout and the auto bailout. You can read my opinion piece in the StarTribune following my NO vote on the bank bailout.
Should you hear more false claims about my record, alert our campaign office immediately. The truth is not on their side, so I have no idea what they will come up with next.
Sincerely,
Congressman Tim Walz
